The Power of a Negative Spirit
Then he came to his hometown and began to teach the people in their synagogue. They were astonished and said, “Where did this man get such wisdom and miraculous powers? 55 Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother named Mary? And aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas? 56 And aren’t all his sisters here with us? Where did he get all this?” 57 And so they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his own house.” 58 And he did not do many miracles there because of their unbelief. Matthew 13:54-58 (NET1)
This is a most amazing passage. Even the Son of God, God in the flesh, could not perform many works of power in Nazareth because of the people's critical spirit and unbelief! How much more is that true in the local church. This should make it clear why Satan uses offenses and accusations to undermine the unity and power of the church. When we find ourselves judging others in an accusatory way, we should immediately repent because we have become one of the church's biggest hindrances to fulfilling God's will. May God bring us to a place of believing in what God is doing in our own church and supporting it with all our hearts!
