Praying for God to intervene in the public arena
O Sovereign Lord, the strong one who rescued me, you protected me on the day of battle. 8 Lord, do not let evil people have their way. Do not let their evil schemes succeed, or they will become proud. Interlude 9 Let my enemies be destroyed by the very evil they have planned for me. 10 Let burning coals fall down on their heads. Let them be thrown into the fire or into watery pits from which they can’t escape. 11 Don’t let liars prosper here in our land. Cause great disasters to fall on the violent. 12 But I know the Lord will help those they persecute; he will give justice to the poor. 13 Surely righteous people are praising your name; the godly will live in your presence. Psalms 140:7-13 (NLT)
King David, a man who knew and understood God's heart, was not timid about asking for God to intervene in his behalf for the sake of righteousness. It is important that we do not use prayer as a form of witchcraft in order to manipulate and control. That being understood, however, we can and should pray according to basic principles of righteousness, such as the following found in the above passage.
Pray for God's will to be done and for the evil plans of men to be brought to nothing.
Pray that the evil schemes of the wicked will backfire upon them.
Pray that the truth will prevail and that liars will be exposed.
Pray that disaster will fall upon those who plot violence on others.
Pray for strength for those who are being persecuted. This could soon be us in the United States!
Pray for God to bring justice to the poor and oppressed.
Pray that God's people will be always praising.
